Mystic Outdoor Art Festival 2010

I am very honored to have my stamp design commissioned by The Museum of America and The Sea at Mystic Seaport for the upcoming Mystic Outdoor Art Festival. Can't wait to see how this looks on brochure covers and tees. Thank you, Mystic, and Thank you, Dalvero Academy, for this amazing opportunity!

August of 2010 marks the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and Mystic Seaport commemorates the tragic event by receiving live oak donations to be used in restoration of the last surviving wooden whaling ship Charles W. Morgan [built in 1841].
It truly is One Life For Another.

The festival is scheduled for the second weekend in August:
Saturday, August 14th, 10 am to 6 pm
Sunday, August 15th, 10 am to 5 pm

If you've never been, Mystic Seaport is an incredible destination for the entire family.

Shakespeare in the Park :: Richard III

Last Sunday, my friends and I spent a dreamy evening in Central Park, watching and drawing Shakespeare's "Richard III" staging by the magnificent New York Classical Theater.

It's a free event with intimate feel to it, in the midst of luscious greenery of the park, with great acting and beautiful costumes...The crowd follows the actors from spot to spot inside the park, as the sun sets. The closing scene happens against a deep navy sky and flickering of fireflies.

It's just one of those New York secrets one must discover. In July, don't miss New York Classical's staging of "Much Ado About Nothing" in Battery Park.

PartyTime!

I made a flier for my friend's event (hey, come by if you're in the area!)
The theme of party is electro-swing, and nothing says Art Deco like swing music...

Drawing Music :: Happy Apple

Yesterday, I left my house to draw Shakespeare in the park, but ended up drawing local jazz festival instead. All thanks to the rain. And my friend Sasha. 5 hours spent, 3 venues in Greenwich Village visited, 5 bands heard.

Happy Apple's drummer

Here's some drawings of our favorites from the second night of Undead Jazz Festival, Happy Apple. "They talk to me", said Sasha about their music. This Minneapolis trio was vibrant and theatrical. The music had elements of 70's improvisational jazz that really did sound like talking. And, at times, like cursing and blabbering ... with occasional confessions, gossip, bragging and colloquy. Such great, eloquent show!

Drawing Music :: Matmos & So Percussion

"Propulsive Musical Experiment"

Matmos, an electronic duo known to me for their work with Björk, and So Percussion just released new collaborative album Treasure State.  As aptly described on Cantaloupe Music record label site, this album is a "propulsive musical experiment". Matmos & So kicked off their American "Treasure State" tour in NYC at the (Le) Poisson Rouge. And I was there, under the stage, drawing and dissolving in the sounds.

People Full Of Funnies

I just returned from the 10th Annual Funniest Jewish Amateur Comedian Contest. Was it funny? At times-very! I'm most happy about my friend Victor Wishna, whom I came to support, becoming one of the finalists tonight.

He always looks so serious-and that makes his jokes even funnier!

Here are some drawings of the other comedians. I kept thinking: how one draws a joke or a sense of humor...?
The Stone twins were everybody's favorite! They kept talking simultaneously on top of one another, making themselves feel like one person instead of two! Goofy as ever,  and so very funny...

Of course, in the medley of performers, there was this one comedian whose jokes filled the room with heavy quietness. It could be that the night was still young and not enough alcohol was consumed. Or maybe...he..just...wasn't funny.

Here's the guy who took the first place tonight, Bryan Wilson, the cellist. He sang some of his jokes while playing the cello.

Then there was one spunky lady whose name I did not catch...

And a few other performers whose jokes I can't remember anymore.

As the saying goes, "A comic says funny things; a comedian says things funny."
Some had funny ideas, others had funny presence. The ones who captured the audience most had both those things going. I guess that makes them...the comic comedians.

Pairs. I mean...Paris.
